Israel conducted an airstrike on the coastal Syrian city of Latakia on Thursday, while the United States launched multiple strikes on Huthi rebel targets in Yemen, nearly a month into Israel’s war with Hezbollah in Lebanon. These actions reflect the broader conflict in the Middle East, as Syria, the Huthis, Hezbollah, and Hamas are all part of the “axis of resistance” led by Iran. On October 1, Iran launched a missile strike on Israel, which has since vowed to retaliate. Concerns are growing that this already multi-front war could escalate into a full-scale regional conflict.
In response to potential threats, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards chief, Hossein Salami, warned Israel of severe consequences if it targets Iran. Speaking at the funeral of a general killed in an Israeli strike on Beirut, Salami said, “If you make a mistake and attack our targets, whether in the region or in Iran, we will strike you again painfully.”
The Israeli strike on Latakia, a stronghold of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, injured two civilians, according to Syrian state media. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a UK-based monitor, reported that the strike targeted a weapons depot in the city. While Israel has not commented on the bombing, it has previously launched hundreds of strikes in Syria, aiming to cut off Hezbollah’s supply lines from Iran.
In Yemen, the U.S. conducted strikes on Huthi-controlled areas, targeting underground facilities storing weapons used to attack civilian and military vessels. U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin confirmed the use of B-2 bombers, which carry a heavier weapons payload than most modern aircraft. The strikes were part of broader U.S. support for Israel, though Washington has pressured Israel over the high civilian toll of its operations in Gaza and Lebanon.
Meanwhile, the war in Lebanon, fueled by Hezbollah’s involvement, has claimed at least 1,373 lives. Israeli bombardments of Hezbollah targets have killed civilians, including the mayor of Nabatiyeh in southern Lebanon. Rescue workers in the area have reported widespread destruction, with entire neighborhoods flattened by Israeli strikes.
In Gaza, the humanitarian crisis worsens as Israeli forces intensify their assaults. The UN has warned of a looming famine, with over 200,000 people in northern Gaza deprived of food and water for nearly two weeks. The ongoing Israeli campaign has claimed over 42,000 lives, mostly civilians, according to the Gaza health ministry.
