After Tropical Storm Helene’s remnants caused catastrophic floods, North Carolina’s town of Marshall is struggling to recover. Beyond its banks, the river swelled and this tiny monumental town, home to around 800 people and located along the French Broad River, was swiftly inundated, with homes, businesses, and streets buried profound under dense viscous sludge. Residents and volunteers are nearing together now to begin altering forward, remaking, and undertake the gradual and needing process of cleanup.
The family that owns Penland and Sons Department Store on Main Street is the Rector family, an established and established hereditary business. Their beloved store and family photos and keepsakes lay scattered with mud for the family members of Dennis and Susan Rector, along with their son Ryan, to sift through and to remove dirt from for days after the flood. Working, Ryan Rector shared a poignant sentiment, remarking, “It feels like home despite how negative it looks.” Ryan’s childhood spent in the store brings nostalgia to the Rectors—it’s more to the store than just a business, a place that existed before the murky destruction of the flood.
The extent of damage in Marshall is quite expansive. Businesses like Ponders Auto and the Marshall Depot, which was a popular regional music venue, were totally destroyed. Buildings such as the Police Department and Town Hall were thoroughly damaged beyond repair. Residents have compared the damage to scenes from war zones as it is so harsh. Despite that destruction happening, the town’s spirit remains potent.
The community in Marshall has spearheaded the recovery process. A massive group of roughly 100 volunteers have gathered to dig up the town, largely locals, utilizing shovels, hefty machinery, and steadfast resolve. The owner of Red Shed Woodworks and Construction, Matt Yeakley, oversaw the cleanup operations. He went to the construction site precocious, got his machinery in place, and started supervising the volunteers to excavate waterlines and to crystal away mud so the larger machines could move in. Yeakley’s casual leadership has been considered crucial in initiating the town’s recovery. Yeakley stated he wasn’t appointed to this position. “If it’s not controlled, it will remain here for various days.”

The town faces substantial threats from possible future flooding owed to environmental intense weather conditions heightening. Business owner Josh Copus pointed out that the floodwaters reached 27 feet great, far exceeding the former record of 22 feet set in 1916, revealing an heightening severity of flood events. Copus acknowledged the reality of climate change while reflecting on its past and persisting disastrous impact.
