The latest one, Hurricane Helene, hit on the night of September 26, 2024. winds reaching up to 160 mph, was among the strongest storms ever to strike state. This little county is nestled along Florida Big Bend region. It experienced an incredible run hurricanes. Earlier storms included Idalia in 2023 andby in August 202.

The damage from Helene has been awful. Coastal spots like Dekle Beach, Keaton Beach, & Steinhatchee have taken a huge hit There are homes destroyed, roads underwater, & power lines down everywhere. Many folks are left without electricity! Early reports say that the destruction is “overwhelming.” Like most hurricanes, the worst part hit during the eyewall—the ring around the calm center. That’s where you find the strongest winds & highest storm surge—both causing lots of damage.
With this cycle of destruction, people in Taylor County feel worn out and worried about what’s next. The county has less than 22,000 people living there & a median household income around $46,000. It’s tough for them to recover after each storm before another one comes rolling in! The economic hit on this small town is serious. Many homes & businesses are still fixing up from Idalia and Debby. Now Helene adds even more trouble to their rebuilding efforts.
Taylor County is not alone; neighboring Dixie and Levy counties have also faced these storms head-on. This area—mostly rural and not as packed with people as other parts of Florida—has taken more damage than many areas in recent years!
